Tom Dixon uses tufting, printing and embroidery to create textile collection, which he launched at Maison&Objet furniture fair in January 2018 exploring weaving, knitting, knotting and digital printing techniques. The range comprises of an array of cushions and throws, the Super Texture collection encompasses three new product families and updates to two existing ranges.
Debuting at the Parisian trade show, new products include a pair of thick, woolly cushions that feature bold blocks of saturated colour, a set of digitally printed cushions featuring abstract urban landscapes, and a family of cushions and throws embroidered with geology-inspired illustrations. The thick and woolly abstract cushions are made by craftsmen in Varanasi, Northern India, using a hand-tufting technique, which is ordinarily used to make rugs. The result is a pair of hardwearing, shaggy cushions featuring bold blocks of colour. Dixon said the inspiration behind the deep pile cushions included urban perspective sketches and ‘hippy’ wall hangings from the 1970s.
Featuring painterly prints of abstracted urban landscapes, the Paint cushions are another new introduction for 2018. Rendered onto soft canvas, the landscapes were painted by young and upcoming British talent Josephine Ortega who was commissioned by Dixon to create a set of abstracted architectural watercolours based on scenes of British urbanism. To produce the cushions, pink and indigo pigments were printed onto a textured canvas of off-white linen mixed with lightweight viscose. The paint cushions were then digitally printed, sewn, stuffed and finished in Britain. The third new launch is the Geo family of cushions and throws, which are embroidered with geology-inspired illustrations. Recalling rock formations and layered sediment, the bold patterns are embroidered onto two white cushions and a double-sided throw using black thread.
As well as the three new launches, the Super Texture collection includes updates to its existing Soft and Boucle ranges. While the Soft cushions and pouches are now available in wine and khaki, the boucle cushions and throws are now available in khaki and electric blue. “The blue is more electric, intense and vibrant,” said the studio. “The military-inspired khaki has the rare characteristic of acting either as a neutral or a highlight.” While the Boucle cushions are hand-spun using hand-woven yarn in the remote mountainous region of Rajasthan with wool sourced from New Zealand, the Soft cushions and pouches are made using Dutch woven fabric composed of South-African Angora goat hair.
